42 Killed in Dam Collapse in Kenya

At least 42 people died on Monday in the collapse of a dam in a town north of the Kenyan capital Nairobi.

The governor of the region, Susan Kehika, confirmed the death of at least 42 people, with many still missing.

Police told Kenyan television station Citizen TV that the death toll could rise due to the dam collapse.

Earlier on Monday, the Kenyan Red Cross said it had transferred several people to a health facility in Mai Mahiu after sudden floods.

Government data indicates that 76 people have died and over 131,000 have been displaced as of Saturday.

Dozens more were killed and hundreds of thousands displaced after heavy rains in other countries in the East African region, including Tanzania and Burundi.

The East African region experienced unprecedented floods during the last rainy season at the end of 2023.

Experts say that climate change is causing more frequent and severe extreme weather events.
