70 Kilograms of Hashish Seized at French Official’s Residence
French authorities announced on Sunday that security forces had arrested the mayor of a town in the east of the country along with two of her brothers after discovering 70 kilograms of cannabis in her house.
Prosecutor Hugues de Phily told Agence France-Presse that Jamila Habzawi, mayor of Avalon since 2021, was arrested after security forces raided her home and workplace as part of an investigation launched several weeks ago into drug trafficking activities in the small town of six thousand inhabitants.
The prosecutor clarified that investigators had searched Habzawi’s house, the town hall building, and the pharmacy where she works as a pharmacist, but did not specify the quantity of drugs found at her home.
However, a source familiar with the investigation told Agence France-Presse that security forces had discovered at least 70 kilograms of cannabis in Habzawi’s house.
According to the prosecutor, a total of seven people have been arrested in connection with this case, including Habzawi and two of her brothers. He also added that the investigation had also led to the seizure of 983 grams of cocaine, 7,000 euros in cash, and about 20 gold bars.
This raid was carried out as part of a national campaign to combat the growing drug trade in French cities and towns.
