8 students injured in an explosion at a school in eastern Afghanistan

At least eight Afghan students of an Islamic seminary were injured Saturday in an explosion in the eastern Nangarhâr province.

The German news agency quoted a regional official as saying that the explosion occurred at night in the Rodat area and that two of the students, who were in critical condition, were taken to hospital.

A hand grenade was thrown at the school, which also houses dormitories for students, police spokesman Abdul Basir Zabuli told Afghanistan’s Tolo News television.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

ISIS gunmen are active in Afghanistan, particularly in the east, and often carry out attacks against Taliban forces and religious minorities.

Recently, ISIS claimed responsibility for two separate attacks against a Taliban gathering in the capital Kabul.

Since seizing control of Afghanistan, the Taliban says it has improved security in the country and kept it away from military threats. But international officials and analysts say there is still a risk of a return to violence.
