Yemen: UN efforts to extend truce amid fears of Houthi violations

The international community is rushing to help Washington renew the UN truce in Yemen, only hours after it ended, and last week saw intense steps by the UN envoy to Yemen, in an attempt to renew the UN truce that expires on October 2, but it is not yet known where those efforts, which are hampered by Houthi militia conditions, have ended.

American fears

On his part, the United States tried to resolve the crisis of the renewal of the truce. American Secretary of State Antony Blinken confirmed, in a tweet on his official Twitter account, that he discussed by phone with the United Nations envoy to Yemen, Hans Grundberg, efforts to extend the truce in the country. The American Secretary of State said that he had expressed to the United Nations envoy to Yemen his country’s concerns over the recent Houthi measures, which hinder the benefits of the truce reaching millions of Yemenis.

Houthi obstacles

Houthi’s conditions represent a number of obstacles to renewing the truce, which is in its final throes. et Abdel Malak al-Mekhlafi, Advisor to the President of the Republic of Yemen, spoke about it in a series of tweets through his official Twitter account, saying that the Houthi militias’ demand for salaries from the legitimate government, although they seize the capital and most of the state’s resources, is a clear recognition of legitimacy and that they have no legitimacy. Al-Mekhlafi warned that any truce project that meets Houthi’s conditions will not be acceptable; The real truce is one that responds to the demands of the Yemeni people and their legitimate leadership, and is committed to international legitimacy and authority, “not to please a gang that is condemned by all UN resolutions and has harnessed the people’s potential and money to kill and starve them instead of relieving them and paying their salaries”.

Moral collapse

Nabil Jamil, a member of the government negotiating team to open the roads to Taiz, said that while the Houthis are demanding a full opening of the airport in Sanaa and the port of Hodeidah and paying the salaries of employees, “we find them practicing historic hatred and vengeful acts against Taiz and its people and refusing to open its main roads.” He stressed that the success of the UN truce is linked to the opening of the main roads in Taiz, noting that “the political controversy of the Houthi militia on the roads of Taiz no longer convinces the followers of the group itself, let alone the international community, which speaks with one voice to open the main roads in Taiz. Jamil pointed out that the Houthi militia continues to “the moral and humanitarian collapse from where they want to win politically” Intensive discussions on the renewal of the truce, noting that “its expansion is a humanitarian and political necessity. It is also an opportunity we cannot miss.”

Houthi casualties

Houthi militias have recently admitted the loss of three of their military commanders in the wake of a new escalation on the front lines, and despite their denial of their violations of the truce, the death processions they conduct daily in the governorates under their control, especially field commanders, constitute a damning acknowledgement of the Houthi militias’ position behind the military escalation. The latest losses were a funeral operation conducted by Houthi militias in Sanaa for three field commanders who were allegedly killed on the “front lines of battle in the line of duty” to defend their destructive project, according to rebel media. This comes a day after the Houthi militias’ funerals of five leaders, including prominent leader Wahid Hamdan Shaab, who was killed along with his escorts in a military attack on Houthi forces in western Yemen, and a source of information about the Houthi militias All were killed during the military coup attack that targeted the southern Al-Tuhayta and Al Jarrahi areas on the western coast, and dozens of militia members, including prominent leaders, were killed and wounded over the past two days.
