International condemnation
The Houthi movement has committed war crimes since the peace deal ended last month, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said, referring to sniper attacks and shelling.
The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights has since said it has verified three incidents of shelling in government-controlled areas that killed a boy, a man and injured others, as well as three sniper shootings, which it blamed on the Houthi movement.
“We are gravely concerned for the safety and security of civilians,” said Jeremy Lawrence, spokesman for UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, noting that the deliberate targeting of civilians and civilian structures is prohibited under international law and constitutes a war crime.
Houthi crimes
With this international acknowledgment of the Houthi crimes, there have been many questions as to why the international community remains silent on this terrorist group. As Yemeni analyst Waddah Bin Attiyah confirmed, international actions against the terrorist group are attempts and statements of condemnation only, with no real action or effective measures taken against the Houthis.
The Yemeni political analyst added: The Houthis are accomplices in the pillaging of the south and their ambitions in the south surpass all other criminal forces, in addition to their ambitions in Yemen to implement the Iranian subversive plan that seeks to target Yemen, and then the Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt and other countries, through the use of these Brotherhood and Houthi militias to implement their terrorist plan.
He said it was time for real international action to stop Houthi crimes and to act effectively by including these terrorist militias on international terrorism lists and stopping all their funding sources coming from Iran and Hezbollah.
