Spread of Measles in Gaza… Is it turning into an epidemic?

The suffering of the people of Gaza has not stopped at the woes of war, as the tragedy of this sorrowful city has extended to the health sector, especially with the shortage of medical supplies and the overcrowding of displaced individuals.

The difficult situation has exacerbated the spread of infectious diseases such as “measles,” and a large number of doctors have warned that this disease may turn into an epidemic due to the lack of hygiene, water scarcity, and the necessary treatment to eliminate the disease.

Measles is transmitted among people through coughing or sneezing, and the chances of its spread are high in the summer due to the rise in temperatures. Recently, Marwan Al-Hams, the director of Abu Yousef Al-Najjar Hospital, announced the spread of measles among children in the Gaza Strip, indicating that the cases have reached around 1,500 daily, affected by gastrointestinal diseases due to food shortages.

Al-Hams stated that there is an outbreak of diarrheal and influenza diseases among the displaced individuals in Rafah, describing the situation as catastrophic.

Measles is one of the most dangerous infectious diseases, and its main symptoms include fever, vomiting, and skin rash. It is a viral disease that spreads slowly because its transmission depends on close contact with the infected person.
