The Muslim Brotherhood Promised al-Atta Leadership of the Army after Ousting al-Burhan… Details
High-level sources in the Rapid Support Forces have revealed a plot by the Muslim Brotherhood to eliminate the commander of the Sudanese army, Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, and some of his close associates, primarily Shams al-Din al-Kabbashi, through Transitional Sovereignty Council member and his aide, Yasser al-Atta.
The sources disclosed that the Muslim Brotherhood has promised al-Atta that he would become the army commander, replacing al-Burhan, who has become a heavy burden and is seen as a reason for the loss of cities and states following military defeats by the Rapid Support Forces.
Intelligence reports concerning this plot exist, one of its features being al-Atta’s recent comments that al-Burhan would annul the old constitutional document and replace it with a new one, and that an independent Prime Minister would be appointed. The sources indicate that al-Atta was the front for this, executing orders from the “Kizan” (a nickname for the Muslim Brotherhood) to whom al-Burhan also answers.
The sources added, “The Muslim Brotherhood sees al-Burhan and his associates as a burden, both internally with officers abandoning their positions and fleeing the army, and externally with the combat elements of the Muslim Brotherhood militias not recognizing al-Burhan‘s authority as a military leader. Continuing this situation may increase the instability among their ranks more than it already is.”
The sources highlighted that what al-Atta presented regarding al-Burhan issuing a new constitutional document and appointing an independent Prime Minister is part of this struggle, aiming to reorganize the internal leadership.
They also noted that the political and military situation within the army and its allies from the Muslim Brotherhood militias requires a new formulation, especially in front of Arab, African, and international circles.
Political sources from the Democratic Civil Forces Coordination (Taqadum) indicated that al-Atta has completely surrendered to the Muslim Brotherhood, becoming their mouthpiece for a long time, waiting for the opportunity to become the army commander, a policy the Muslim Brotherhood excels at, using it to incite internal purges among the army leadership, especially at this time when strategic positions and areas are being lost, with continuous defeats by the Rapid Support Forces.
Al-Burhan and the Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, General Shams al-Din al-Kabbashi, are seeking any formula to prevent any internal plot to oust or freeze them, by finding new frameworks that give them political legitimacy after the fracture of their military authority. Among these attempts was al-Kabbashi’s meeting with the leader of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North, Abdelaziz al-Hilu, in Juba, which failed.

The sources added, “al-Kabbashi was negotiating the delivery of supplies and weapons to army garrisons in Kadugli, Babnousa, and Abu Jibeha. He wanted to reach an implicit agreement with the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement that would take the form of securing the delivery of humanitarian aid to the Nuba Mountains region. The underlying intention of this agreement was to support the mentioned garrisons so they would not fall into the hands of the Rapid Support Forces, in a bid to maintain any military balance and appear to be making political gains.”
