The “Portfolio Diet”: The Path to a Healthy Heart and a Longer Life
A recent study has revealed that the diet known as the “Portfolio Diet” might be the perfect solution for lowering bad cholesterol levels and reducing the risk of coronary artery disease.
This plant-based diet primarily focuses on a group of foods that enhance heart health and reduce inflammation.
Dr. Sarah Hall, a cardiology specialist and assistant professor at Yale University, explains that the Portfolio Diet includes “a group of cholesterol-lowering foods,” such as plant proteins (beans, lentils, soy), plant sterols (natural compounds that lower cholesterol), soluble fiber, and monounsaturated fats.
Researchers like Christina Petersen, a nutrition professor at Pennsylvania State University, assert that this diet can lower bad cholesterol levels by up to 29% in just four weeks.
While similar to other healthy diets like the Mediterranean Diet, the Portfolio Diet is entirely plant-based. Studies show that strict adherence to this diet can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease by 14%.
Additionally, the Portfolio Diet is rich in fiber, which contributes to better gut health and reduced inflammation in the body.
Dr. Hall highlights that most Americans do not consume enough fiber. Women need 21–25 grams daily, while men require 30–38 grams.
To begin implementing this diet, experts suggest simple changes, such as having oatmeal with nuts for breakfast or preparing lunches with whole grains, vegetables, and legumes. If a complete shift seems challenging, they recommend gradually incorporating the diet’s elements, which can still yield noticeable health benefits.
Researchers emphasize that full adherence to the Portfolio Diet provides the greatest health benefits. However, any increase in plant-based foods can help lower cholesterol levels and improve heart health.
