The “Mandarin”: When Does It Become Harmful to Health?


Dr. Evgenia Melnikova, a specialist in gastroenterology, explained that mandarin is a rich source of vitamin C and antioxidants, making it a beneficial food for health when consumed in moderation. However, she warned of potential health risks associated with excessive consumption.

Dr. Melnikova pointed out that the daily requirement of vitamin C for the human body is 90 mg, while a single mandarin contains approximately 25 mg, which is about one-third of the daily recommended dose. She thus advises not to exceed three mandarins per day.

She explained that vitamin C boosts the immune system, aids in collagen production, accelerates tissue regeneration, and maintains healthy teeth and gums.

However, excessive consumption of mandarins may lead to irritations and allergic reactions, such as skin rashes, itching, conjunctivitis, or even angioedema.

Moreover, mandarins stimulate the production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach, which may cause heartburn or worsen conditions like gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), gastritis, and ulcers. The excessive fiber intake from overconsumption may also result in bloating and gas.

Dr. Melnikova also noted that the high fructose content in mandarins may cause an increase in blood sugar levels, exacerbating issues for diabetic patients, particularly when consumed in large quantities.

Therefore, experts recommend consuming mandarins in moderation to reap their health benefits while avoiding their potential risks.
