Tunisia’s Muslim Brotherhood: Are the Recent Judicial Rulings Paving the Way for the Dissolution of Ennahdha and Its Classification as a Terrorist Organization?

The judicial rulings issued early Saturday morning against the Muslim Brotherhood in Tunisia have sparked a wide political debate about the need to permanently dissolve the Ennahdha movement and designate it as a terrorist organization.

In this context, Tunisian political analyst Omar El Iferni that the recent verdicts “have shattered the Brotherhood’s illusions of returning to power,” noting that what happened is the result of an accumulation of cases implicating Ennahdha in terrorist and security-related activities. Chief among them is the attempted assassination of President Kais Saied, a case in which a ruling is expected in May and which could carry a death sentence.

El Iferni noted that “these rulings strengthen the likelihood of Ennahdha being designated as a terrorist party, especially since its leader Rached Ghannouchi has already been sentenced to several prison terms, including 22 years for a case of espionage and 5 years for foreign funding violations.”

He also pointed out that “the movement is involved in cases of political assassinations and sending young people to conflict zones.” In his opinion, “with most of its leadership imprisoned, the Brotherhood has lost its ability to influence or manage political conflicts. They have been stripped of their core tools: media, financing, and alliances.” He added that “the legal dissolution of Ennahdha has become a popular demand that can no longer be ignored.”

A group of MPs has submitted a political motion to Parliament demanding the dissolution of Ennahdha and its classification as a terrorist organization.

The motion states that dismantling the “destructive apparatus” linked to Ennahdha is a fundamental condition for rebuilding the state and reclaiming national institutions from infiltration. It calls on all state institutions, including Parliament, to fully engage in this course of action.

According to the motion, the Ennahdha movement includes leaders involved in suspicious foreign funding and is linked to a “secret apparatus” responsible for political assassinations, the transfer of fighters, and cross-border terrorism.
