Increase of tensions between Algeria and Turkey


It was reported that ties between Algiers and Ankara become stressed after the gatherings between representatives of the Turkish authorities and members of the Rachad Movement. Indeed, the Algerian authorities categorize the Rachad movement as an extremist group that present threat of national security.

Knowledgeable sources informed Algerian newspaper el-Khabar that the gatherings were held on two occasions in Istanbul and Antalya, while the two parties talked tools of supporting the organization to allow their activities in Algeria. The newspaper stated that Algerian authorities knew about the gathering that is set to induce tensions between the two countries.

The same source also indicated that the Turkish regime, under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, might decide to add Algeria to its list as a new target in North Africa, and seeks to activate the immobilize cells of this organization.

According to the sources, Turkey is seeking to distantly interfere in the internal affairs of Algeria and destabilize the nation, adding that welcoming Rachad members is a provocation that would interrupt the ties between the two countries; particularly at a time that some information showed that Algeria is seeking to introduce the movement on its list of terrorist organizations.

Algeria and Ankara bilateral relations

Nevertheless, all signs indicate that bilateral ties between Algeria and Ankara have become model in political consultation, security coordination, and cooperation that includes many strategic fields.

Previously this month, the High-Security Council, led by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, alerted of subversive activities by illegal movements close to terrorism…exploiting weekly [Hirak] marches. It also denounced separatist circles in reference to the Rachad movement and another group trying independence for the Kabyle region.

Tebboune affirmed that the state would not tolerate these deviations that are not related to democracy and human rights in any way, requiring the immediate and rigorous application of the law to stop like activities. Tebboune also alerted: The state will be intransigent.
