A century-old giant turtle from Greece discovered in Egypt!


Authorities in Alexandria Governorate have announced the discovery of a rare sea turtle on the 6th of October Beach. The turtle measures one meter in length and weighs 40 kilograms.

The turtle bears metallic tags on its front flippers, which contain information regarding its identity and age.

According to the data, the turtle originates from the “Okealon” reserve in Greece and has been identified as 104 years old. It has also been registered with a unique code (13159).

Governor Ahmed Khaled Hassan Said of Alexandria has instructed that the turtle be handed over to the Environmental Affairs Authority in Alexandria to ensure the necessary procedures are carried out in accordance with international agreements on the protection of endangered species.

Additionally, Alexandria authorities announced that the Environmental Affairs Authority has transferred the turtle to the Turtle Protection Center in Port Said, where it will receive care and treatment before being released back into its natural habitat. Meanwhile, contact has been established with Greek authorities for its repatriation.

According to Egypt’s Ministry of Environment, the turtle has been confirmed to be in good health. It has been sent to the turtle rescue center in the “Ashtoum El Gamil” nature reserve for examination and care, with all necessary procedures being followed under international protocols for the protection of endangered species.
