A Nuclear-Proof Facility Ten Times Bigger Than the Pentagon… Discover China’s “Fortress”

As China strives to establish itself as a global military power, Beijing is constructing an unprecedented military command facility, which is ten times larger than the American Pentagon.

This fortified center, located southwest of the capital, has been dubbed by military analysts as the “Beijing Military City,” according to the British newspaper Financial Times, which reported that this new facility, whose construction began in 2024, will house underground shelters for the country’s top officials.

Satellite images obtained by the newspaper and analyzed by U.S. intelligence show a construction site covering approximately 1,500 acres, 30 kilometers southwest of Beijing. The images reveal deep excavations believed to contain large fortified shelters designed to protect Chinese military leaders during any conflict, including a potential nuclear war.

The U.S. military stated that the intelligence community is closely monitoring the facility, which is expected to become “the world’s largest military command center, ten times the size of the Pentagon,” and has been labeled the “Beijing Military City” by military analysts.

According to the Financial Times, the assessment of satellite images indicates that major construction work began in mid-2024. At that time, no visible military presence was detected at the site, but warning signs prohibited drone flights and photography.

Dennis Wilder, former head of Chinese analysis at the CIA, told the newspaper:
“If these reports are confirmed, this new advanced underground military command bunker, including President Xi Jinping as head of the Central Military Commission, would indicate Beijing’s intent to develop not only a world-class conventional military force but also an advanced nuclear warfare capability.”

This construction comes as the Chinese military develops new weapons and strengthens its capabilities in preparation for the army’s centennial in 2027. U.S. intelligence reports that President Xi Jinping has also instructed the military to be capable of attacking Taiwan by that time.

Additionally, China is rapidly expanding its nuclear arsenal and improving the integration of its military branches, as experts consider the lack of integration to be one of its key weaknesses compared to the U.S. armed forces.

A former U.S. intelligence official stated that while China’s current military headquarters in central Beijing is relatively modern, it was not designed as a secure wartime command center.

He added: “China’s primary secure command center is located in the western hills, northeast of the new facility, and was built decades ago at the height of the Cold War.”

According to him, “the size, scale, and nature of this new facility suggest that it will replace the western hills complex as the primary wartime command center.”

The former intelligence official further noted that “Chinese leaders may see this new facility as offering greater security against U.S. bunker-busting munitions and even nuclear weapons. It may also incorporate more advanced and secure communication systems while providing space for expanding the Chinese military’s capabilities and operations.”

A Chinese researcher familiar with the satellite images stated that the site “bears all the hallmarks of a highly sensitive military facility,” including heavily reinforced concrete and deep underground tunnels.

He added: “It’s about ten times bigger than the Pentagon, and it aligns with Xi Jinping’s ambitions to surpass the United States.”
