A severe cold wave sweeps across China, reaching minus 27 degrees Celsius

A wave of extremely cold weather is sweeping through wide areas in northern China on Thursday, with the expectation of a continued sharp drop in temperatures for the coming days.

Meteorological experts in China anticipate a significant temperature drop in many southern regions in the next few days. They also predict that the cold wave will expand from the north to reach central and southern regions.

Several provinces in northern China are already experiencing snowstorms, and forecasts indicate that some northeastern cities will record temperatures as low as minus 27 degrees Celsius until December 18th.

Snow and ice have led to the closure of 194 roads, including 126 highways in various provinces, according to China Central Television (CCTV) quoting the Ministry of Transport.

The cold has also forced authorities to keep schools closed. The city of Zhengzhou, the capital of Henan province, has asked parents to activate remote learning for children in kindergartens, elementary schools, and middle schools. The city has also suspended many train services.
