A U.S. report highlights close military cooperation with Morocco

The U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Political-Military Affairs has reaffirmed Washington’s view of Rabat as a vital partner, emphasizing Morocco’s key role in counterterrorism efforts.

A U.S. report has shed light on the growing military cooperation between Washington and Rabat, noting that Morocco leads African nations in arms deals with the United States. The U.S. administration is expected to further strengthen its defense partnership with Morocco, given the strong relations between President Donald Trump and King Mohammed VI.

The report, issued by the Bureau of Political-Military Affairs of the U.S. Department of State, highlights that Washington considers Rabat a key strategic partner, praising the Royal Armed Forces for their significant role in counterterrorism and their active participation in peacekeeping operations in conflict zones, according to Moroccan news outlet Assahifa.

The report states that “the United States works closely with Morocco to enhance regional stability, counter terrorist threats, and strengthen trade exchanges, while also supporting the kingdom’s efforts in development and reform”.

According to the same source, Morocco is the largest buyer of U.S. military equipment in Africa, with deals worth more than $8.5 billion.

The report details several major arms deals between Rabat and Washington, including the acquisition of 18 HIMARS missile launch platforms, Harpoon missiles, advanced radar systems, and Apache attack helicopters.

Furthermore, Washington has provided Morocco with approximately $32 million in recent years under the International Military Education and Training (IMET) program, which has enabled Moroccan soldiers to attend U.S. military academies for advanced training, strengthening professionalism and defense capabilities.

U.S.-Morocco military cooperation has witnessed significant growth since the two countries signed a 10-year defense agreement in 2020, further solidifying their strategic coordination. Arms deals have played a crucial role in enhancing Morocco’s military arsenal with cutting-edge weapons and equipment.

The report also underscores Morocco’s leading role in counterterrorism efforts, noting that since 2005, the kingdom has participated in a U.S.-funded initiative aimed at combating extremism across the Sahel region.

It highlights Morocco’s participation in the Global Counterterrorism Forum and notes that the kingdom was the first North African country to join the Global Coalition Against ISIS in 2014.

Morocco has established itself as a trusted international security partner thanks to its high-level vigilance and expertise in foiling terrorist threats. Its effective cooperation with international intelligence agencies has led to the dismantling of dozens of terrorist cells, both within the kingdom and across Europe.
