The former Libyan Mufti, Sadiq al-Ghariani, continues to serve the Muslim Brotherhood by issuing fatwas that align with their interests, in exchange for moral and symbolic support from the group. Recently, on his program aired on Al-Tanasuh channel, he called for public demonstrations and chaos, encouraging a repetition of the unrest experienced by Libyans in 2011 and 2012.

He claimed that this was necessary to combat what he referred to as “passivity,” even though he has consistently opposed electoral processes for fear that the outcomes might harm the Brotherhood’s political standing, according to Akhbar Libya.

According to the Libyan site, al-Ghariani’s views and fatwas extend further. He supported the 2017 bombings of the Misrata courthouse complex, describing them as divine wrath. He also approved the terrorist attack on the Oil Crescent region and repeatedly urged residents of Ajdabiya, Benghazi, and Derna to join extremist groups against the Libyan army.

Additionally, al-Ghariani has targeted the current Libyan government, calling for war against Eastern Libya to seize oil fields. He suggested cutting off gas and oil supplies to Europe, claiming it would affect the United States, which he accused of controlling the Arab world through oil—despite the fact that oil exports are Libya’s primary source of revenue.

International agreements have not been spared from his criticism. In 2020, he labeled a memorandum of understanding signed between the Government of National Accord and France as “scandalous,” deeming it contrary to Islamic law.
