Armed factions have become a key player in the Syrian landscape – Details

Since the onset of the Syrian crisis, numerous political and civil entities have emerged, striving to implement various visions for the country’s future. Some represent the opposition in international forums, while others manage liberated areas or advocate for political dialogue.

During her program “The Other Shore”, broadcast on Cairo News, Egyptian journalist Dalia Abdel Rahim presented an infographic highlighting the main civil political forces and their roles in the Syrian landscape.

At the forefront is the National Coalition for Syrian Revolutionary and Opposition Forces, representing the opposition on international stages, followed by the Syrian Negotiation Commission, which engages in negotiations with the regime to reach a political solution.

Other entities include the Syrian Interim Government, supported by Turkey and tasked with managing liberated areas in northern Syria, and the Syrian Democratic Council (SDC), the political wing of the autonomous administration, which includes Arabs and Kurds.
Additionally, the Moscow Platform, a moderate opposition group advocating for dialogue, and the Cairo Platform, another opposition faction favoring discussions, play significant roles. The Kurdish opposition parties demand Kurdish rights within a national framework, while civil opposition organizations focus on enhancing the role of civil society in rebuilding Syria’s future.

Dalia Abdel Rahim emphasized that armed factions have now become a major player in the Syrian scene. Despite the fall of the Syrian regime two weeks ago, weapons remain a dominant presence. These various armed factions, with differing goals and alliances, are striving to assert themselves in the formation of Syria’s future government.

Over the past decade, Syria has been undergoing one of the most intricate phases of armed power struggles in the region. The country is fragmented among dozens of armed factions, engaged in multifaceted wars against the Syrian regime and among themselves. This relentless conflict has continued since the uprising began in 2011 and persists to this day.
