In a shocking incident in the city of Torres, in the south of the country, the family attended a gathering where they ate a cake prepared by Zélie dos Anjos, the mother of the suspect’s husband, who is now fighting for her life in the hospital.
Zélie’s sisters, Maida da Silva (58 years old) and Noza dos Anjos (65 years old), as well as Noza’s daughter, Tatiana dos Santos (43 years old), died hours after consuming the cake. Tatiana’s 10-year-old son, Matheus Marques, was poisoned but survived after several days in the intensive care unit.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the flour used to prepare the cake contained dangerously high levels of arsenic. Police Chief Marcos Vinícius Veloso stated that the suspect had entered Zélie’s home and added the toxic substance to the flour. He also mentioned that tests confirmed the presence of arsenic in the victims’ blood.
The disputes between Daisy Mora and Zélie dos Anjos date back over 20 years, but the police have not disclosed specific details about the nature of these conflicts. Sources stated that Daisy raised suspicions during the victims’ funeral, where a fight broke out between her and a family member.
It is also believed that the death of Zélie’s first husband, Paulo Luis, last September due to “food poisoning” may be connected to the case. Police have announced plans to exhume his body for further testing.
Margit Metiman, the director of the Public Investigation Institute, confirmed that the arsenic concentration in one of the victims exceeded 350 times the lethal dose. She stated that investigations are ongoing to analyze the evidence found in Daisy’s house, including chemicals and pesticides.
