Brutal Assault in Taiz: Are Media Cameras Becoming a Target for the Muslim Brotherhood?

In a serious escalation threatening press freedom and highlighting the growing dominance of partisan militias in Taiz, journalist Hael Saeed Al-Sharahi from Al Arabiya Al Hadath and his team were subjected to what has been described as a “brutal” assault inside Al-Thawra General Hospital, located in the eastern part of the city. The assailants were armed individuals affiliated with the 22nd Mechanized Brigade, which is under the control of the Al-Islah party — the political arm of the Muslim Brotherhood in Yemen.

In an official statement reported by Al-Omana Net, the Yemeni Journalists Syndicate called on the local and security authorities in Taiz province to immediately launch a serious investigation into what it called a blatant violation of press freedoms and basic human rights.

According to Al-Sharahi’s account, the news team was on assignment to document the aftermath of an explosion that targeted a fuel station in the Hawdh Al-Ashraf area when they were verbally and physically attacked by armed individuals within the hospital grounds. The assault involved the destruction of filming equipment and mobile phones, and the team was forcibly prevented from covering the humanitarian tragedy.

Sharahi described the incident as a “barbaric assault,” highlighting the growing state of lawlessness and the rise in attacks against journalists, particularly in areas controlled by factions linked to the Muslim Brotherhood. He added: “These practices confirm that media freedom has become a direct target of de facto powers.”

The syndicate expressed its full solidarity with the news crew and warned that the continuation of such attacks fosters a climate of fear and self-censorship, undermining the public’s right to information and posing a direct threat to the future of freedom of expression in Yemen.

Al-Sharahi concluded by affirming that the attack would not deter his team from continuing their journalistic mission and reporting the truth from the field, stressing that “the camera will remain at the heart of the story, no matter the challenges.”
