“Dangerous and Devastating”… Storm “Raphael” Heads toward Jamaica and Cuba
Tropical storm Raphael intensified late Monday as it moved northward toward Cuba, which is still struggling to recover from nationwide power outages and a hurricane that struck two weeks ago.
The U.S. National Hurricane Center stated that the storm is expected to strengthen before passing through western Cuba, carrying winds that could reach a maximum speed of 160 kilometers per hour by Wednesday, according to “Reuters.”
The Miami-based center also warned of dangerous storms and destructive waves in the Cayman Islands.
Last month, Cuba experienced a complete collapse of its national electrical grid, leaving an estimated 10 million people without power for several days. Many residents of the island continue to face prolonged daily power outages due to the shortage of electricity generation.
The national center reported that the storm is located about 280 kilometers from Kingston, Jamaica, with winds reaching 75 kilometers per hour.
