Doctors: Daily Walking Increases Life Expectancy
Dr. Alexander Shishonin, a rehabilitation specialist, confirmed that walking plays a crucial role in cell regeneration and overall health improvement, emphasizing its positive impact on extending life expectancy, according to a report published by the Russian newspaper Izvestia.
Dr. Shishonin explained that bone marrow contains stem cells that transform into different types of body cells, such as bone, cartilage, and fat cells. These cells are responsible for renewing vital organs such as the heart, liver, kidneys, and intestines. He also noted that impaired function of these cells leads to a decline in overall body health.
He pointed out that walking stimulates bone marrow activity, especially since most of it is located in the pelvis and leg bones. Moving the legs during walking improves the flow of oxygen and nutrients to the bone marrow, enhancing stem cell reproduction.
The specialist also noted that regular walking reduces the risk of chronic diseases. He recommends walking for 30 minutes to an hour before bedtime and engaging in brisk walking in the morning, either outdoors or on a treadmill, ensuring a heart rate between 120 and 140 beats per minute to achieve the desired benefits.
He stressed the importance of walking after the age of 40, as it helps boost metabolism and improve overall health.
Dr. Alexandra Miller, a psychology specialist, added that walking is not only beneficial for physical health but also for mental well-being. She described walking as a form of moving meditation.
She explained that focusing on breathing and the surrounding environment during walking helps reduce stress and anxiety, enhancing mental balance and strengthening the connection between mind and body.
