Doll sparks outrage in Britain

The “Golliwog doll” angered residents of Yorkshire in Britain, who considered it a racist depiction against people with dark skin.

A charity shop in North Yorkshire displayed the doll for sale in its window to raise funds for a local cancer charity.

Residents deemed the doll’s display, with black skin, white-rimmed eyes, highly reddened lips, and curly hair, as “racially offensive.”

Local sites quoted a retired caregiver in the city named Ann (64 years old) as saying she “wanted to buy the doll just to remove it from the shop’s display.”

Ann added that she didn’t believe the shop owners understood the significance of the doll, explaining that “even when my friend went to speak to the staff about the doll, they initially refused to stop displaying it.”

She continued: “But when I went to the shop to talk to them about it, one of the staff members told me she didn’t feel the doll was racially provocative, as they had previously sold African items, and these things were not considered to be offensive merchandise for sale.”

She confirmed that the shop has now ceased displaying the doll in its window to avoid stirring up residents’ feelings and resentment.
