El Viceroy… 28 years in prison for Mexican drug lord

Vicente Carrillo Fuentes, former leader of the Juárez cartel, arrested in 2014, is sentenced to 28 years in prison.

The drug lord El Viceroy is the brother of Amado Carillo Fuentes, known as El Senior de los Silos (Lord of the Heavens) who, before his death in 1997, was one of the biggest drug traffickers in Latin America.

Carrillo Fuentes was sentenced to 28 years imprisonment for offenses related to drug trafficking, money laundering and the storage of firearms, as reported by the Prosecutor.

He was arrested in October 2014 in the northern Mexican state of Coahuila, on the border with the United States.

The US authorities paid him a $2.2 million bonus for his arrest, including the years he has spent in prison since his arrest.

Carrillo Fuentes reportedly complained about the death of his brother, the criminal group operating in Ciudad Juárez (North), on the border with the US city of El Paso.

The Juárez cartel was one of the most powerful criminal cartels of the time – namely, the Sinaloa cartel waged a street war with the Sinaloa cartel led by Joaquín “El Chapo” Gusmán, an influential drug lord sentenced to life in prison in the United States.

The bloody conflict in Ciudad Juárez and other parts of the country prompted the federal government to launch a military campaign against drug traffickers in December 2006.
