European Troika Poised to Confront Iran with the Sanctions Weapon

The European troika—France, the United Kingdom, and Germany—has informed the United Nations of its readiness to reimpose sanctions on Iran.

The move, reported by the Financial Times, comes as Tehran refuses to return to negotiations over its nuclear program.

According to the newspaper, citing a letter it reviewed, the foreign ministers of the three countries wrote to the United Nations on Tuesday to indicate the possibility of “reimposing sanctions” unless Iran takes concrete action.

“We have made it clear that if Iran is not prepared to reach a diplomatic solution by the end of August 2025, or does not seize the opportunity for an extension, the three European countries are ready to trigger the mechanism for reinstating sanctions,” the ministers wrote.

The warning follows what were described as “serious, frank, and detailed” talks with Iran in Istanbul last month—the first direct meeting since Israeli and U.S. strikes targeted Iranian nuclear sites.

In the wake of this round of military confrontation between Israel and the United States on one side, and Iran on the other, Tehran continues to refuse the return of International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors to monitor its nuclear program and determine the fate of enriched uranium that may have survived the Israeli-American bombardment of its nuclear facilities.
