Feltman renews his call to al-Burhan for the return of Hamdok’s government

US envoy to the Horn of Africa Jeffrey Feltman renewed his country’s call for Sudan’s army chief, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, to take steps to restore the government.

“Feltman told reporters that both civilian and military sides showed restraint in the protests last Saturday, an indication that both sides understand they need to work together to find a way back to a transition involving both military and civilians”.

On Monday, October 25th, Sudan witnessed a turning point in the transition period when Army Commander Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan announced the dissolution of the Council of Sovereignty and the Council of Ministers and the arrest of the leaders of the civilian component that participated in the government.

These measures were taken to correct the course of the Sudanese revolution, according to al-Burhan. The Forces of Freedom and Change, the main umbrella for the civil component, considered the document a “coup” and vowed to resist it through peaceful popular protests.

Western powers called for the immediate release of detainees, the restoration of the constitutional document, and the return of the dismissed Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdok to his post.

“Feltman said that his country was alarmed by the deteriorating humanitarian situation in northern Ethiopia and urged all parties to the conflict to find ways to de-escalate and allow aid in”.

He said that Washington sees signs of a near famine and that government restrictions often prevent humanitarian aid from reaching those who need it.
