German Army Preparing to Develop Long-Range Combat Drones

Amid a renewed focus on defense, the German military aims to develop an attack drone capable of striking targets deep within enemy territory.

The German business newspaper Handelsblatt reported on Monday that the armed forces are preparing to develop long-range combat drones capable of hitting targets deep behind enemy lines.

According to the report, three corporate consortia are currently working on conceptual designs after the German Air Force issued a request for drones capable of carrying out strikes in enemy territory.

Airbus Defence is contributing to the project alongside the U.S. startup Kratos, while German firm Rheinmetall is collaborating with Anduril, a company specializing in drone technologies.

The report also notes that the Munich-based startup Helsing is participating in the project.

The German Ministry of Defense confirmed to the newspaper that preparations for such a project are underway, noting that initial discussions have taken place, although no official tender has yet been issued.

Observers say that the drone Germany seeks to acquire would represent a significant advancement for its air force, especially amid the growing dominance of drone warfare and the increasing impact of unmanned systems in modern conflicts.

The new drone will be added to Germany’s current fleet of non-offensive drones, such as the Heron 1.

The Heron 1 is an unarmed and unmanned aerial vehicle. However, it remains vital to the armed forces thanks to its camera systems.

It is primarily used for aerial reconnaissance, thereby contributing to the protection of ground troops.

For instance, the drone can accompany military units and detect threats early enough to allow soldiers to respond in time.
