Global Cancer Cases Could Rise by 67% by 2050


The number of new cancer cases worldwide is expected to increase substantially over the coming decades. According to the latest estimates from the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), the number of new cancer diagnoses could rise from approximately 20.6 million in 2024 to 34.4 million by 2050, representing a 67% increase.

This projected increase does not necessarily mean that an individual person’s risk of developing cancer will rise by the same proportion. It reflects several broader trends, particularly global population growth and ageing, as well as changes in exposure to a number of cancer risk factors.

Population ageing is a major factor

One of the main reasons behind the expected rise in cancer cases is population ageing. The risk of developing many types of cancer increases with age, partly because cellular damage and genetic changes accumulate throughout life.

As life expectancy increases in many parts of the world, more people are reaching the age groups in which cancer becomes more common. Demographic change therefore contributes substantially to the overall number of new cancer cases.

Many risk factors can still be prevented

Population growth and ageing are not the only factors involved. Tobacco use, alcohol consumption, overweight and obesity, physical inactivity, certain infections and exposure to air pollution can also influence the global cancer burden.

A 2026 analysis by IARC and the World Health Organization estimated that 37% of all new cancer cases in 2022, corresponding to approximately 7.1 million cases, were linked to preventable causes.

This finding highlights the importance of prevention. Reducing tobacco use, limiting alcohol consumption, maintaining a healthy body weight, engaging in regular physical activity and preventing certain infections can all help reduce the risk of several types of cancer.

Vulnerable countries could face particularly rapid growth

The projected increase is unlikely to affect all regions equally. Countries with fewer resources may experience particularly substantial increases in cancer cases while simultaneously facing limitations in screening, early diagnosis and access to treatment.

Earlier IARC projections have indicated that the proportional increase could be particularly pronounced in countries with low and medium levels of human development.

This could further widen global health inequalities. A growing number of patients also means greater demand for oncologists, medical facilities, medicines, radiotherapy and palliative care.

The most common cancers

The latest global estimates show that lung cancer remains the most commonly diagnosed cancer worldwide, followed by female breast cancer and colorectal cancer among the leading cancer types.

However, cancer patterns vary considerably from one region to another. Differences in lifestyle, environmental exposure, population structure, access to healthcare and prevention programmes all influence the distribution of different cancers.

Prevention could change the projections

The projected increase is not inevitable. Cancer forecasts are based on current trends and demographic assumptions, meaning that effective public-health policies can alter the future burden.

Tobacco control, vaccination against certain cancer-causing infections, reducing exposure to harmful substances, addressing obesity and promoting physical activity are among the measures that could help reduce the future number of cancer cases.

IARC estimates that a substantial proportion of cancers could be prevented through effective prevention strategies.

The number of new cancer cases worldwide could reach approximately 34.4 million annually by 2050, compared with 20.6 million in 2024 — an estimated increase of 67%.

The projected rise is driven largely by population growth and ageing, alongside changes in exposure to certain risk factors. Strengthening prevention, improving early detection and reducing inequalities in access to cancer care will therefore be essential to limiting the human and economic impact of cancer in the decades ahead.
