Google Workspace Updates – Google adds a new layer

The Google group announces double authentication in Workspace, in the event of an action deemed “risky”, without really specifying on what occasions this system will be put in place.

Google will increase its security standards on the Workspace professional suite. The group details this update in a blog post published on August 9, 2022. The tech giant’s tools – Gmail, Docs, Sheet, Meet – are used by more than two billion people around the world. This overwhelming popularity in the working world makes it a prime target for hackers. The latter usually seek to spoof an employee’s email in order to trick others with ransomware, data theft or transfer of funds.

To avoid these incidents, Google is introducing double authentication in the workspace suite which will be requested in the event of an action deemed “risky”. The administrators will be the first informed and obliged to enter a secret code in the event of a modification in the system, the addition of a new profile or a change of password, for example. The ordinary user will see less of the change, the double authentication will be requested in case of action ” at risk says Google, without giving more details.

An increase in safety standards

In fact, 2FA is already enabled for the messaging service. According to the rules established by the company, the password can be changed only under the control of the administrator. We still have a little trouble imagining when the average employee will need to type in a code. This update will potentially be more visible on the admin side.

The group has been successively adding new security means for a few months, with notifications to administrators in the event of questionable manipulation by a user, encryption of videos on Google Meet as well as the addition of an electronic signature on Docs from Workspace. The main competitor remains the Microsoft suite, with a wide range of security measures as well, but fewer users: around one billion worldwide.
