A nap is often seen simply as a way to recover after a poor night’s sleep or a particularly tiring morning. On the other hand, a nap that is too long or taken at the wrong time can leave a person feeling heavy, confused, and even more tired after waking up.

Duration is the key

To benefit from a nap without slipping too deeply into sleep, a short nap is generally preferable. A nap lasting around 10 to 20 minutes can help reduce sleepiness and restore alertness while minimizing the risk of significant sleep inertia.

When a nap becomes longer, the likelihood of entering deeper stages of sleep increases. Waking up at that point can produce temporary confusion, sluggishness, and fatigue. This phenomenon, known as sleep inertia, explains why some people feel more tired after a long nap than they did beforehand.

Choose the right time

Timing is also important. For many adults, early or mid-afternoon is a period when alertness naturally declines. A short nap during this window may therefore help restore energy without significantly interfering with nighttime sleep.

Some people use a strategy known as a “coffee nap”: they drink a small amount of coffee immediately before taking a short nap. Because caffeine generally takes some time to reach its full effect, its stimulating action may begin around the time the person wakes up.

This approach may be useful in certain situations, but it is not suitable for everyone. People who are sensitive to caffeine or have difficulty sleeping should be cautious, particularly if the nap occurs later in the day.

Why can a long nap have the opposite effect?

A prolonged nap may cause a person to wake up during deeper sleep. The brain then needs some time to return to normal levels of alertness. During this period, a person may experience pronounced sleepiness, temporarily reduced concentration, and a feeling of mental fog.

This does not mean that naps are harmful. Rather, it suggests that the duration or timing of the nap may not have been appropriate for that individual.

A few simple principles can help turn a nap into a useful recovery tool:
