In a Chinese bakery, the “Squid game” challenge turns into reality

Following the dramatic success of the South Korean series “Squid Game”, which is being broadcast by Netflix, a bakery in Beijing has presented a challenge for making desserts, relying on the theme of the series.

Customers can pretend to be one of the characters in the series by taking part in the dessert-making challenge, for 58 yuan (US$9), by trying to convert a mixture of sugar and baking soda into beautiful forms.

There is no prize for success and no penalty for failure, unlike “Squid Game,” where winners receive huge cash prizes and losers are punished with death.

Hao Jing, herself a big fan of the show, said: “Our customers are mainly young people who represent a large number of fans of this work’’.

Participants in the challenge, which lasts about 10 minutes, select shapes from metal cookies, dissolve sugar, add baking soda, and then convert the mixture into shapes.

The final stage is difficult, as the mixture quickly holds together and becomes fragile and prone to cracking.

In the 9-episode drama “Squid Game”, cash-strapped competitors play children’s games, but they have deadly consequences as they seek a prize of 45.6 billion won ($38 million).

The series has caused worldwide sensation since its release last September, and has become one of the brightest series on Netflix.
