In Memory of the “Flood”: The War in Gaza Returns to Its Initial State

The Israeli army announced the initiation of military operations throughout Gaza at dawn on the anniversary of October 7, while a barrage of rockets was launched from the territory.

A year ago, militants from Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on military bases and settlements in the Gaza envelope, resulting in an unprecedented Israeli response.

As international voices rose to demand a ceasefire in the devastated sector, Israel stated that it had launched military operations across the region.

For its part, the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the armed wing of Hamas, announced on Monday its responsibility for launching rockets from Gaza toward Israel.

The Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades stated in a press release that its fighters fired rockets at “occupation concentrations” near the Rafah crossing, Keren Abu Salem, and the kibbutz Kfar HaHoresh, near the Gaza border.

Israel began this morning commemorating the first anniversary of the Hamas attack on October 7, 2023, which it considers the deadliest day in the history of the Hebrew state.

In Raanana, at the site of the attack targeting the Nova music festival, a crowd of people marked the ceremony by observing a minute of silence at 6:29 AM (3:29 UTC), the time the unprecedented attack by Hamas began on southern Israel.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will deliver a speech today. Other gatherings are scheduled in Tel Aviv, as well as at the kibbutz Nier Oz, where about thirty of its residents were killed and more than 70 others taken hostage and led to Gaza.

Elsewhere, from Sydney to Berlin, and from Buenos Aires to New York, numerous gatherings will take place to commemorate this surprise attack that resulted in 1,205 deaths on the Israeli side, according to a toll from Agence France-Presse based on official Israeli figures.

About 42,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed in the devastating Israeli attack on the Gaza Strip.

On Sunday, tens of thousands of people demonstrated around the world, either to honor the victims of the October 7 attack or to support the Palestinians a year after the start of the devastating war in Gaza.

In Tel Aviv, hundreds of Israelis gathered on Sunday to commemorate the first anniversary of the attack. Images of the victims were displayed on a screen, while participants lit candles and wrote messages or embraced each other in silence.

On the eve of the anniversary of the Hamas attack, Israel raised its state of readiness.

An Israeli policewoman (25 years old) was killed and ten others were injured in a shooting and stabbing attack in the city of Beersheba.

The police clarified that the attack occurred “at the central bus station in Beersheba” and that “the assailant was neutralized.”

After a year of war and the failure of all mediation attempts, the Israeli assault on Gaza continues as well.

Early Monday morning, the Israeli army announced that it had bombed the Al-Aqsa Hospital in Deir al-Balah, in central Gaza, claiming that it housed Hamas command centers.

Additionally, the Health Ministry in Gaza reported on Sunday that 26 people were killed in Israeli strikes targeting a mosque sheltering displaced persons and a school in Deir al-Balah, while the army claimed to have targeted Hamas fighters.

Emergency services in the region reported on Sunday that Israeli strikes in the Jabaliya area (north) had resulted in at least 17 deaths, including nine children.

The Israeli army had previously announced that its forces were “encircling” the Jabaliya area following a report indicating that Hamas was working to “repair terrorist infrastructure” in that area.

In this context, a member of Hamas‘s political bureau, Khalil Hayya, stated in a video that “the glorious passage of October 7 broke the illusions that the enemy had traced and convinced the world and the region of its superiority and supposed capabilities.”

The first anniversary comes as threats between Israel and Iran continue, amid missile attacks that Tehran launched against the Hebrew state last Tuesday, to which Israel promised to respond.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Galant warned Iran on Sunday that it could suffer destruction similar to that observed in Gaza and Beirut if it caused harm to his country.

He stated: “The Iranians did not touch aviation capabilities (during their last attack on Tuesday), no aircraft were damaged, no squadron was taken out of service.” He added: “Anyone who thinks that a simple attempt to harm us will prevent us from acting must look at Gaza and Beirut.”

For weeks, Israel has been conducting strikes on Lebanon, primarily in the south, but also focusing on the southern suburbs and the Bekaa region.

About a week ago, Israel began a limited ground operation aimed at pushing Hezbollah fighters beyond the Litani River to allow the return of residents from northern Israel to their homes after a year of displacement, as the exchange of bombardments began on October 8 of last year.
