Iran warns: Any state bombing the Houthis exposes itself to danger
After Tehran condemned the joint strikes carried out by the United States and Britain against Houthi sites in Yemen, Iran’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amir Saad Eravani, accused the United States and the United Kingdom of “declaring war on the Yemeni people.”
In a veiled threat, Eravani stated that “any state that participated or will participate in future attacks may expose itself to potential danger.” In an interview with ‘Newsweek,’ he stated that “the attacks carried out by Washington constitute a blatant violation of Yemen’s sovereignty, a breach of international law, and a violation of the UN Charter, ultimately amounting to a declaration of war against the Yemeni people,” according to his expression.
He considered these attacks as indicating the success of the pressure exerted by Israel to push America into direct war, exacerbating the expansion of the conflict to other parts of the region, referring to the ongoing Israeli war since October 7 in the Gaza Strip.
He wondered, “When will the Red Sea turn into an unsafe area, and what factors contributed to this transformation?” He clarified, pointing out that the ongoing war in Gaza is what motivated the Houthis.
When asked about Iranian support for the Houthis, whether with weapons or training, the Iranian ambassador affirmed that his country is committed to the arms embargo imposed on Yemen. He said, “We consider the arms embargo imposed on Yemen to be unfair, but despite our reservations about it, we have committed to our responsibility as a member state of the United Nations and respected its decisions.”
Regarding the possibility of further escalation or subsequent Houthi attacks, Eravani pointed out that this matter is solely dependent on the Houthis, seemingly deflecting his country’s responsibility in this regard.
These statements came after the US and British attacks targeted more than 60 Houthi targets in 6 Yemeni provinces over the past two days, hitting Houthi military storage sites, as well as radar sites and manufacturing and storage centers for drones and missiles.
On their part, the Iranian-backed Houthi group threatened to retaliate against these attacks, although any major response has not occurred until now.
