Israel strikes Hezbollah positions in Lebanon

The Israeli army carried out airstrikes on Thursday targeting positions and an operative of Hezbollah in various areas of Lebanon.

These new attacks come amid escalating threats of a military operation against Hezbollah should the Lebanese army fail to disarm the group, particularly south of the Litani River.

They also precede an anticipated meeting involving Israeli, Lebanese, and US representatives, following an earlier meeting held at the beginning of the month to discuss strengthening the ceasefire agreement.

In a statement, the Israeli army said it had targeted a Hezbollah operative in the town of Taybeh in southern Lebanon, without disclosing his identity or role.

The army also reported striking a camp and military buildings belonging to Hezbollah in several parts of the country.

“The Israeli army carried out strikes on Thursday against terrorist infrastructure belonging to Hezbollah in various areas of Lebanon,” the statement said.

It added that “during the strikes, terrorist infrastructure and launch platforms were destroyed inside a camp used by Hezbollah to conduct training and preparation for its operatives, as well as for the activation of artillery fire and the storage of combat equipment.”

According to the statement, “as part of the training conducted at the camp, Hezbollah operatives underwent shooting exercises and training in the use of various types of weapons, with the aim of planning and carrying out operations against Israeli army forces and the citizens of the State of Israel.”

The Israeli army further stated that “in other strikes carried out in different areas deep inside Lebanese territory, the Israeli army targeted military buildings used by Hezbollah to store combat equipment, from which Hezbollah operatives have been operating in recent times.”

The locations of the targeted sites were not specified.

The Israeli army considered that “the presence of Hezbollah infrastructure and activities at these sites constitutes a violation of the understandings between Israel and Lebanon and poses a threat to the State of Israel,” adding that it “will continue to act to remove any threat to the State of Israel and to prevent Hezbollah from rebuilding its capabilities.”

A fragile ceasefire agreement between Israel and Lebanon came into force at the end of last year. Since then, the Israeli army says it has carried out hundreds of strikes against Hezbollah positions and operatives.

By contrast, no attacks have been recorded from the Lebanese side.
