Khamenei: Damascus Ignored Our Warning about a Plot to Overthrow the Regime

The Supreme Leader of Iran discusses disagreements between Syrian military leaders and Iranian commanders before al-Assad's fall.

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ali Khamenei, stated that his country had warned the Syrian government last September of an American-Israeli plan to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad, but those warnings were ignored. He claimed that a neighboring country played a clear role in the fall of the Syrian regime, referring to Turkey, which supports armed factions that succeeded in taking control of Damascus.

He accused the United States and Israel of being behind the events in Syria, saying, “The main conspirator, the principal planner, and the central operations room are in America and the Zionist entity. We have evidence of this, and this evidence leaves no room for doubt.”

According to the local Tasnim agency, Khamenei stated that “the scope of the resistance will expand more than ever to encompass the entire region.” He added, “Resistance is resistance: the more pressure you exert on it, the stronger it becomes. The more crimes you commit against it, the greater its resolve. By God’s grace, the resistance will expand across the entire region.”

He also emphasized that those who believe weakening the resistance would weaken Iran are mistaken. He stressed that Tehran “remains strong and will grow even stronger,” refuting analyses suggesting that al-Assad‘s fall would weaken the Islamic Republic.

Khamenei spoke about the Syrian armed groups that toppled al-Assad’s regime, noting that each had different goals. He asserted that the occupied areas in Syria would be liberated by patriotic Syrian youth, leaving no doubt about this outcome.

He further claimed that “America’s foothold will not endure and will be expelled by the resistance front.” Khamenei justified Iran’s intervention in Syria as a response to ISIS and to protect what he described as sacred sites.

Regarding Iran’s role against ISIS, he said his country had quickly realized that if this threat was not stopped, it would spread into Iran itself. He clarified that Iran’s military presence in Syria and Iraq was advisory and not intended to replace national armies.

Khamenei also touched on disagreements between Iranian advisors and Syrian military officials, regretting some decisions made by the latter. He emphasized that the main role in the fight rested with the Syrian army.

Finally, he highlighted the ideological nature of resistance, asserting that it is based on unwavering belief and determination, and external pressures only strengthen this spirit. He cited the example of Lebanon’s Hezbollah, which, despite losing its leaders, has grown stronger.
