Killing of an American officer of Yemeni descent in Michigan

An American officer of Yemeni descent was killed on Sunday while pursuing a suspect in the city of Melvindale, located in Wayne County, in the northeastern United States.

The executive director of the American Center for Justice (ACJ), Abdulrahman Barman, revealed the details of the incident to “Erem News,” as recounted by the Melvindale Police Chief and broadcasted by an American TV channel.

According to Barman, the incident occurred Sunday morning, U.S. time. “Mohamed Said Al-Bajli, a city police officer, suspected a person who was riding a bicycle. He informed the police station that he had spotted someone who might be suspicious or in need of help, confirming that he was following him to check the situation and assist if necessary.”

He explained that “when Officer Al-Bajli reached the man and stopped him, he initially chose to treat him kindly to understand who he was. But the man unexpectedly pulled out a gun and shot Al-Bajli directly, killing him instantly, before quickly fleeing.”

The Melvindale police obtained photos and a video showing the suspect, identified as Michael Lopez, 44 years old, of Spanish descent, riding his bicycle. They managed to locate his residence, a motel.

Barman noted that “police patrols surrounded the motel where the killer was, but he managed to escape on his bicycle. However, the police discovered his girlfriend, who shared the room with him, arrested her, and took her to the police station for questioning.” The search for the killer is still ongoing.

The Melvindale police circulated the suspect’s photo and personal information through media and news channels, distributing his image to security patrols and public places, calling on anyone who encounters the man to promptly report him to the police. They emphasized the need for caution as he is considered armed and dangerous.

Mohamed Said Al-Bajli, 24 years old, was of Yemeni descent, specifically from the Jabn region in the northeast of the central province of the country. He had been working for the Melvindale police in Michigan for over a year and held American citizenship.
