“Time for a Solution”
Amid these developments, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said to reporters in Tel Aviv on Wednesday that the time has come to end the war in Gaza, adding that Israel must do more to allow humanitarian aid into the strip.
Blinken said: “Since October 7 last year, Israel has achieved most of its strategic objectives regarding Gaza… Now it is time to turn these successes into a lasting and strategic victory.”
Commenting on aid to Gaza, he said: “Progress has been made, which is good, but more progress is needed, and most importantly, it must continue.”
This comes after Blinken’s remarks in which he said the killing of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar represents “a significant opportunity” to end the ongoing war in Gaza.
Despite calls for a solution, there are no signs of ongoing negotiations between the parties, after a year-long trilateral mediation effort failed to bring Israel and Hamas to an agreement.
Sinwar was killed in a clash with a military force in southern Gaza on October 16. Israel accuses him of being the mastermind behind the October 7, 2023, attack.

The Hamas attack a year ago resulted in the deaths of 1,206 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures, including hostages who died or were killed during their captivity in Gaza.
