New Contacts Between the Muslim Brotherhood and the Houthis… Details

Yesterday, the Al-Islah Party, the Muslim Brotherhood’s branch in Yemen, presented a proposal for an agreement with the Houthis that includes forming an alliance and a joint government. This comes at a time when the party claims to oppose Iran-backed militias and aims to topple them and liberate the areas under their control.

Western diplomatic sources reported that Abdulrazzaq Al-Hajri, acting secretary-general of the Brotherhood-affiliated party, is conducting communications on behalf of what is known as the “National Coalition of Political Parties and Forces”, a bloc formed by Al-Islah with U.S. backing. He has been in contact with foreign ambassadors to pave the way for dialogue with what he refers to as the Houthis, according to Al-Khabar Al-Yemeni.

According to experts, Al-Islah’s decision to act unilaterally reflects extreme opportunism and an attempt by the Brotherhood to portray itself as a peace-supporting force in order to gain support from key stakeholders in the Yemeni crisis.

The sources indicated that the Brotherhood seeks to play an active role in the ongoing conflict with the Houthi terrorist militias by pledging loyalty to the United States, which continues to deliver painful strikes against the Iran-aligned group. Al-Islah’s goal, they say, is to secure its share of power—whether the Houthis are defeated or remain in their areas of control.

It is worth noting that Al-Islah has taken many hostile positions against the Houthi terrorist militias, despite numerous pieces of evidence pointing to a relationship between the two parties and past negotiations regarding the Brotherhood’s participation in the militias’ government.

Previously, leaders and figures of the Muslim Brotherhood in Yemen had expressed their support for the Houthis’ attacks on shipping lanes in the Red Sea and Bab al-Mandeb Strait.
