New York records an event absent for 700 Days
A thin layer of snow covered areas in New York on Tuesday, after more than 700 days without measurable snowfall.
The National Weather Service on the “X” platform stated: “It has been 701 days since Central Park recorded any snowfall in a single day.”
Since midnight on Monday, the snowfall rate reached 2.5 centimeters, as shown by an official gauge in Central Park, according to the weather service. It added that the total accumulated snowfall reached 3.55 centimeters since the start of the storm on Monday.
Other neighborhoods in the city, such as Brooklyn, were clearing snow from sidewalks after a long weekend. In northern neighborhoods, some schools closed, and public transportation experienced some delays.
New York City, with a population of 8.5 million, has not experienced significant snowfall since the beginning of 2022. In other areas of New York state, like Buffalo, snow falls regularly and poses a hazard.
During the Christmas period in 2022, the snow thickness in northern and western parts of New York reached over a meter, and dozens lost their lives in these areas.
The pace, intensity, and unpredictability of snowfall in the United States and other regions worldwide are influenced by climate change.
