Not recorded since 1884… Britain records unprecedented temperatures

The United Kingdom recorded its highest temperatures in June since the country began recording temperatures in 1884, according to the British Meteorological Office. They added that climate change resulting from human factors means that such unusual heat will become more frequent in the coming decades.

The average temperature in the UK during June was 15.8 degrees Celsius, which is 0.9 degrees Celsius higher than the previous record, which was 14.9 degrees Celsius in 1940 and 1976, according to provisional data released by the Meteorological Office.

Weather experts say the likelihood of surpassing the previous common record since the 1940s has at least doubled due to climate change.

Paul Davies from the Meteorological Office said, “In addition to natural variability, global warming due to climate change caused by human factors has increased the likelihood of recording record high temperatures… By the 2050s, the chance of surpassing the previous record of 14.9 degrees Celsius could reach about fifty percent or every two years.”

Wide areas of the country, from the Orkney Islands in northern Scotland to Cornwall in southwestern England, recorded high regional temperatures last month, with many experiencing an increase of two and a half degrees Celsius above the average.

The Meteorological Office stated that the highest temperature recorded last month was 32.2 degrees Celsius, which is well above the usual extreme temperatures that occur in the twenties at this time of year.
