Nuts not recommended to be consumed raw… Contain toxic substances

It is well known that nuts are highly beneficial to humans; however, it is not advisable to consume all types of nuts raw due to their potentially serious impact on health.

According to experts quoted by “Gazeta” magazine, some types of nuts contain, in addition to vitamins, toxic substances that pose a health risk.

For example, almonds should undergo heat treatment before consumption because they contain amygdalin cyanoglycoside (3-5%), and the breakdown of this substance leads to the release of hydrocyanic acid.

Furthermore, almonds should be slightly dried, and frying them at high heat is also not recommended to preserve the beneficial compounds they contain.

Consuming raw peanuts poses a health risk as it can cause digestive disorders and allergies. However, after roasting, the level of beneficial polyphenols increases by 20-25%.

While roasted cashews are beneficial for health, raw cashews are hazardous because they contain a toxic fatty substance called urushiol, which can cause contact dermatitis and itching.

People intolerant to urushiol should avoid consuming raw walnuts, as a small portion of this toxin can be lethal.

Experts emphasize that during roasting, unsaturated fatty acids found in nuts are destroyed. These acids are responsible for maintaining blood pressure levels and the aging process.

For this reason, it is essential to monitor the roasting process, knowing that the lower the temperature used, the less destruction of health-beneficial compounds.

The beneficial properties of nuts vary depending on their types. For example, almonds contain a high percentage of dietary fiber, protein, vitamin E, unsaturated fats, and antioxidants, while hazelnuts contain manganese and copper.
