On the Anniversary of the War in Ukraine… Russia Fails to Understand Trump’s Plan and Sets Its Negotiation Objective

On the third anniversary of the start of the war in Ukraine, Russia has repositioned its political strategy after significant shifts in the U.S. stance.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov summarized Moscow’s position, stating on Monday that his country “will stop fighting” in Ukraine once it secures what it wants from the “negotiations.”

Last week, Lavrov participated in unprecedented talks with his American counterpart, Marco Rubio, hosted by Saudi Arabia. This marks a major strategic shift in Washington’s stance on the war.

The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump seeks to end the conflict through negotiations that do not require Kyiv’s participation, sparking outrage among European allies and rejection from Ukraine.

However, the Russians do not seem to be in a more favorable position regarding the U.S. proposal. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov told the Russian news agency today that last week’s U.S.-Russian talks in Riyadh did not provide much clarity on President Donald Trump’s peace plan for Ukraine.

Trump is pressuring Kyiv to strike a deal involving Ukraine’s mineral resources in exchange for the support Washington has provided to the former Soviet republic over the past years.

Ryabkov stated that Moscow is seeking a long-term peace agreement on Ukraine that addresses what it sees as the root causes of the conflict, rather than a quick U.S.-backed ceasefire that could lead to an immediate resumption of hostilities.

According to the news agency, Ryabkov said in an interview that Moscow aims to secure an agreement capable of withstanding future challenges.

“We can confidently perceive the American side’s desire to move towards a quick ceasefire,” he explained.

However, he added, “A ceasefire without a long-term settlement is a direct path to the rapid resumption of fighting and further escalation of the conflict, with even more serious consequences, including for U.S.-Russian relations. We do not want that.”

He concluded, “We need to find a sustainable solution, which in turn must include an approach to addressing the root causes of what happened in Ukraine and its surroundings.”
