Peace in Ukraine at Stake: Moscow Questions the Value of Changes by Kyiv and Europe
Russia criticized on Sunday the European and Ukrainian amendments introduced to the US plan aimed at ending the war.
Russia’s Interfax news agency quoted Yuri Ushakov, the Russian president’s senior foreign policy aide, as saying that he was confident that prospects for peace in Ukraine had not improved following the changes made by Europeans and Ukrainians to the proposed American plan to end the conflict.
Ushakov told journalists: “These are not assumptions. I am certain that the proposals put forward, or that Europeans and Ukrainians are attempting to put forward, do not improve the document in any way and do not enhance the prospects of achieving lasting peace.”
European and Ukrainian negotiators are currently discussing the introduction of amendments to the US proposals in an effort to reach an agreement to end a war that has been ongoing for nearly four years, although it remains unclear exactly what changes have been made to the original American proposals.
Meanwhile, US negotiators met with Russian officials in the state of Florida on Saturday.
Ushakov clarified that a meeting involving American, Ukrainian, and Russian envoys “is not being prepared,” while separate talks are taking place in Miami with both the Russian and Ukrainian sides regarding a settlement to the conflict between Kyiv and Moscow.
Russian news agencies also quoted Ushakov, the diplomatic adviser to the Russian presidency, as saying: “No one has seriously addressed this initiative so far, and to my knowledge, it is not under preparation.”
For his part, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s special envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, told journalists after his meeting with US special envoy Steve Witkoff and President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, that the talks had been constructive and would continue on Sunday.
