Rouhani urges Biden to return to nuclear deal

On Wednesday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani requested US President-elect Joe Biden to return to a 2015 nuclear deal and lift the Islamic Republic’s sanctions. Biden, who starts his function on Wednesday, related that the United States would rejoin the deal that contains limitations on Iran’s nuclear work if Tehran continues the strict obedience.

Rouhani stated in a televised cabinet gathering: The ball is in the US court now. If Washington returns to Iran’s 2015 nuclear deal, we will also fully respect our commitments under the pact, adding: Today, we expect the incoming US administration to return to the rule of law and commit themselves, and if they can, in the next four years, to remove all the black spots of the previous four years.

It should indicate that tensions between Tehran and Washington had increased since 2018, while US President Donald Trump remove from the pact between Iran and six world powers that aim to limit Tehran’s nuclear program and avoid it developing atomic weapons. However, Washington imposed again sanctions that have ruined Iran’s economy.

Otherwise, Iran that rejects its intention to obtain nuclear arms, reacted to Trump’s maximum pressure policy by progressively violating accord, and Tehran has frequently indicated that it could rapidly back from those violations if US sanctions are lifted.

On his part, Antony Blinken, who Biden’s choice for secretary of state, stated on Tuesday that the United States would not take a quick decision on whether to rejoin the pact.

Rouhani also said: US President Donald Trump’s political career is over today and his ‘maximum pressure’ policy on Iran has completely failed, adding: Trump is dead but the nuclear deal is still alive.
