Saudi Arabia and Iran… Where have the steps of rapprochement reached?


Under the auspices of China, Saudi Arabia and Iran recently announced an agreement for rapprochement and the resumption of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The agreement will calm the escalating tensions in the region, which are caused by Iran’s destabilizing policies and methods in the Arab countries through supporting and financing its militias.

Saudi Arabia and Iran agreed to resume diplomatic relations, reopen their embassies, respect the sovereignty of states, non-interference in their internal affairs and activate the security cooperation agreement signed between them in 2001. In a joint statement, Riyadh and Tehran affirmed respect for the sovereignty of states and non-interference in their internal affairs.

Meetings continue between the two countries

Saudi Arabia and Iran have agreed on Chinese-sponsored reconciliation, which includes resuming diplomatic relations between Tehran and Riyadh and reopening their embassies and representatives within two months of the formal deal.

The Saudi and Iranian foreign ministers plan to continue meetings before the end of Ramadan to implement the agreement. Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan and Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian held their second telephone conversation in less than a week.

On March 19, an Iranian official reported that President Ebrahim Raisi had accepted an invitation from King Salman to visit Saudi Arabia, and sources in the Saudi Foreign Ministry speculated that the period between April 12 and 22 was the most likely time for the two ministers to meet.

Sources indicated that the city of Mecca may be the place for the meeting between Bin Farhan and Abdollahian. It is expected that the Iranian Foreign Minister, Hossein Amir Abdollahian, will perform the Umrah pilgrimage to Mecca.

Saudi Arabia: We are preparing to resume diplomatic relations with Iran

Recently, the Saudi top diplomat expressed his aspiration to meet with his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir Abdollahian soon, saying, “We are preparing to resume diplomatic relations between our two countries in the next two months, and it is natural in the future to exchange visits.”

The Saudi Minister noted that this agreement was sponsored and brokered by China and followed several rounds of talks over the past two years in Iraq and Oman, stressing that his country is on the path of de-escalation and de-escalation; Sensing its role and responsibility in promoting regional and international security and stability.

The Saudi minister said the kingdom hopes to open a new page with Iran and enhance prospects for co-operation, which would have a positive impact on consolidating security and stability and promoting development and prosperity in the region.

Bin Farhan stressed that the most important requirement to open this new page is to abide by what the two sides agreed upon and the contents of the Saudi-Iranian-Chinese trilateral statement stipulated.
