Severe viral infection hits european country – 2000 cases reported so far
Health authorities in Romania recorded around two thousand new cases of measles on Tuesday, in 29 out of 41 counties.
The Romanian Ministry of Health stated that this surveillance will help boost vaccination rates among children at risk of contracting measles.
Children between 9 to 11 months old, as well as those who have not completed their vaccination schedule, will undergo vaccination as they are the main targets of the vaccination campaign in the country.
Health officials in Romania expressed deep regret for the significant drop in vaccination rates over the past decade, with approximately 78% of eligible children receiving a single dose against measles.
Health Minister Alexandru Rafila stated that a vaccination campaign with a 95% coverage rate is considered sufficient to keep the risk of measles outbreaks under control, as it is listed in the national immunization schedule for children.
Measles is a severe viral infection that spreads through the air and usually causes serious harm to patients who experience complications. Children are most susceptible to infection, according to the World Health Organization.
