“Smart Insulin”: A Revolutionary New Treatment to Combat Diabetes

Scientists have successfully developed a “smart insulin” that responds to changing blood sugar levels in record time, expected to revolutionize the treatment for millions of people with type 1 diabetes worldwide.

According to “The Guardian,” patients currently have to administer artificial insulin up to 10 times a day to stay alive. Moreover, the constant fluctuations between high and low blood sugar levels can lead to short- and long-term health problems. The struggle to maintain stable levels can also impact patients’ mental health.

Now, scientists have found a solution that experts say is the closest treatment to a cure for type 1 diabetes: smart insulin, which remains dormant in the body and only activates when needed.

Researchers in the United States, Australia, and China have successfully designed new types of insulin that mimic the body’s natural response to changing blood sugar levels, responding in real-time.

These new glucose-responsive insulins only become active when a certain amount of sugar is present in the blood to prevent its rise. They become inactive again when levels drop below a certain point, avoiding hypoglycemia. Experts believe that patients may only need insulin once a week in the future.

The newspaper noted that the scientists behind this new smart insulin have received millions of pounds in funding to accelerate its development.
