Somalia’s opposition leaders declare that they no longer recognize President Farmaajo
Somalia’s opposition leaders declared that they not recognize the President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, after that his period expired without a political deal on a way to make elections.
In a statement published late Sunday that referred to the president by his common nickname, the opposition leaders announced: Starting from 8th February 2021, the council of opposition candidates does not recognize Farmajo as president. The council will not accept any form of mandate extension through pressure.
This comes after the failure of Farmaajo’s government in Mogadishu and the leaders of Somalia’s five federal states in how go towards elections. It was expected that indirect parliamentary and presidential elections hold in Somalia before February 8, however; they didn’t respect the deadline as Farmajo and the regional leaders squabbled over how to conduct the vote.
Otherwise, the United Nations had alerted that Somalia, which is a country already fighting a violent extremist rebellion and serious food deficiencies, exposed to enter uncharted territory if the government’s mandate expires without an agreement on the election process.
While, Farmaajo, who runs for a second term, blamed his regional competitors for go back on an earlier agreement conducted in September that set up a timeline for a vote.
Furthermore, Jubaland that is one of the semi-autonomous regions at odds with Farmaajo accused the president of rejecting their offers to compromise. Besides, the coalition of opposition presidential candidates appealed for the creation of a transitional national council to direct the nation during its crisis, and called Farmajo to respect the constitution.
It should indicate that the group is allied against Farmajo, however; it includes candidates running individually for the presidency including two of Somalia’s former presidents.
