Starmer Plans to Make Britain a Leader in Artificial Intelligence

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer is set to deliver a speech in London on the importance of artificial intelligence (AI). In his remarks, he is expected to state his desire for the UK to become a global leader in this field by establishing special zones for data centers and encouraging more graduates to pursue technology-focused fields of study.

Starmer is also expected to highlight in his speech that he wants AI to be central to his ambition for economic growth, according to Reuters.

The British government has said that fully adopting this technology could increase productivity by 1.5% annually, generating an additional £47 billion ($57 billion) over ten years.

Previously, the government announced its commitment to implementing all 50 recommendations outlined in the “AI Opportunities Action Plan” report presented by entrepreneur Matt Clifford last year.

These measures include facilitating the construction of data centers and ensuring their connection to energy networks. The first such center will be built in Culham, Oxfordshire, at the site of the UK Atomic Energy Authority.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Technology, Starmer said: “Our plan will make Britain a global leader. This means more jobs, more investment in the UK, and more money for citizens.”

Countries worldwide are competing to position themselves as hubs for artificial intelligence while considering the need to place certain restrictions on the technology.

The UK is currently the third-largest AI market globally, following the United States and China, as measured by indicators such as investment and patents established by Stanford University.
