Sudan Faces “Nightmare of Hunger”: 25 Million People in Need of Assistance

UN Secretary-General António Guterres stated on Monday that the Sudanese people, who face increasing hardship each day, are living a “nightmare” of hunger and disease, especially in Darfur.

Guterres addressed the Security Council, saying that after 18 months of war, “the suffering is growing day by day, and we now have 25 million people in need of assistance.”

He noted that the population is enduring a “nightmare of hunger,” with over 750,000 people experiencing “catastrophic” food insecurity, a “nightmare of disease” with fast-spreading illnesses such as cholera, malaria, dengue fever, and measles, and a “nightmare of displacement,” with over 11 million displaced persons, including 3 million refugees in neighboring countries.

The Executive Director of the World Food Programme (WFP) urged the warring parties in Sudan on Sunday to allow full access to the country through various border points to combat the threat of “imminent famine” in a country plagued by deadly conflict for over a year and a half.

A war has been ongoing since April 2023 between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces.

The program’s Executive Director, Cindy McCain, told Agence France-Presse, “We want full access as well as the ability to enter through as many different entry points into Sudan as possible to ensure we can start on a large scale.”

She continued, “Famine is now imminent. There is famine in the Zamzam camp, and it will spread. So it is truly urgent that we can gain access and address it on a wide scale.”

Approximately 11.3 million people have been displaced by the conflict, including nearly 3 million outside Sudan, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, which describes the situation as a humanitarian “catastrophe.”

Around 26 million people are facing severe food insecurity, with famine declared in the Zamzam camp in Darfur.

She added, “It is about getting food and trucks there, so it is essential that the crossings remain open… and other crossings across Sudan, from the South Sudan border to the north. We need as many of them opened as possible.”

Last week, about ten countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, France, and Germany, called for guarantees to ensure humanitarian aid reaches the millions of people in “urgent need.”

On Monday, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that 47,000 people were displaced from al-Jazirah State in the east of the country to Kassala and Gedaref states.
