Taiz rises against Muslim Brotherhood influence: calls for militia expulsion and popular awakening

In recent days, the city of Taiz has witnessed growing political and social tension, with hundreds of Yemenis taking to the streets to demand the expulsion of militias affiliated with the Muslim Brotherhood, in a wave of national anger seen as the continuation of a long-awaited local awakening, according to journalist Dr. Yasser Al-Yafi in statements to Tehama 24.
Yasser Al-Yafi added that this protest movement comes after years of “Muslim Brotherhood interference”, which he described as having destroyed the city’s social and economic structures, affirming that Taiz is beginning to “wake up from the illusion” and to assert its voice against the dominant influence over many aspects of citizens’ daily lives.
Meanwhile, Kholasa Net reported that hundreds of Taiz residents marched on Friday after prayers at Justice Square on Gamal Abdel Nasser Street, chanting slogans demanding the expulsion of Muslim Brotherhood militias, considering their presence a threat to local security and stability.
The crowds expressed their outright rejection of the extortion and interference policies of the group, claiming that it had exploited political chaos and weak security to consolidate control over streets and social services. Large banners blamed the militias for economic deterioration and the lack of justice in resource distribution.
These developments come amid growing anger toward influential armed factions, seen as having exceeded their military role to manage areas and cities as de facto authorities. Local observers note that the city stands at a critical crossroads: either it reclaims its historic role as a free and active city, or it slips further into the chaos of armed domination.
